About the project

In 2012, RadioActive worked with Nuclair Consulting, the Prison Radio Association and the Trinidad and Tobago Ministry of Justice to install a radio station at Golden Grove Maximum Security Prison.  The station is called Rise Maximum Radio and broadcasts through the prison tannoy system to all the prison quarters.

The station programming is produced by prisoners, for prisoners, with the support of some of the prison staff.

Main Objectives

The aims of Rise Maximum Radio are to give prisoners useful lifeskills, provide a platform for discussion and debate on prison issues and provide important information to prisoners.  The station also provides prisoners with company, entertainment and an activity to look forward to getting involved in.

Our Role

Recommended by the Prison Radio Association to work on the project, RadioActive designed and supplied the equipment for the radio studio, installed the equipment and provided training for the 12 prisoners and 10 prison staff who work at the station.  Training topics included:

  • How to produce and present a radio show
  • How to host a radio talk show
  • How to use radio playout software
