5 days after Typhoon Haiyyan hit the Phillippines, RadioActive went out with Internews to Guiuan, Eastern Samar to set up an emergency FM radio station to help in the relief effort.

About the project

5 days after Typhoon Haiyyan hit the Phillippines, RadioActive went out with Internews to Guiuan, Eastern Samar to provide technical support, equipment and training to set up an emergency FM radio station to help in the relief effort. Working with Phillippino staff of the local radio station that had been destroyed in the typhoon, Radio Bakdaw was set up within 3 days of arrival and broadcast for three months, providing vital relief information, helping families find lost loved ones and supporting the relief effort.

Main Objectives

The aims of Radio Bakdaw were as follows:

  • To support the relief effort following Typhoon Haiyyan (Yolanda)
  • To help families find lost loved ones
  • To provide information about availability of relief supplies, including food, medicine and shelter materials
  • To promote job vacancies for the relief agencies
  • To provide information, company and entertainment for typhoon survivors

Our Role

RadioActive supplied equipment and provided technical assistance to get Radio Bakdaw on the air and trained and supervised the station team for the first three weeks of broadcasting,
